By definition, compliant mechanisms gain some or all of their motion through the deflection of flexible members.  For our compliant mechanisms course we applied the principles of compliant mechanisms to modify a common drum brake mechanism, which is really just two four-bar mechanisms, to create a fully compliant drum brake.  The pin joints in the original mechanism were replaced with small-length flexural pivots.  We inverted the compliant segments to place them in tension.  Finite element analysis was run to model the mechanism and an acrylic prototype was created to validate the model.
